Castle

Liscarroll Castle.

The third largest castle in Ireland, Liscarroll Castle was built in the 13th century. It was likely built by the de Barry family around 1260.

In 1649 it sustained damage from cannon fire by Cromwellian forces and was no longer considered a defensible castle. The castle fell into disrepair in subsequent centuries, but was occupied by the British military in 1920 during the Irish War of Independence.

In 1936 the castle was made into a National Monument by the Office of Public Works.
