The sieges of Liscarroll and the important battle which took place there on the 3rd September, 1642, have been described more than once, the accounts being based upon contemporary records but telling of less than nothing a structure which must have been erected more than 300 years before. it  is hardly to be expected, indeed, that the seventeenth century observers of the conflict would know much about the ancient building but it is remarkable that earlier references are lacking or have not yet come to light.
